 SHIELD BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

Austin’s 1st Tim Burrill Jiu Jitsu Affiliate, Run By Tim Burrill Black Belt Gabriel Pearlman
Shield BJJ is a center for learning the dynamic martial art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Anyone can learn from anyone.  That’s our experience.  So we choose not to break our classes up by age or experience.  All it takes is enthusiasm and a willingness to try, and you can get better at this.  Likewise, we don’t focus too much attention on belts.  They are nice, and it’s always great to be recognized, but at the end of the day they don’t protect you or fight on your behalf.  Nor are they a replacement for a work ethic.

Our Lineage

My instructor, Tim Burrill, trained under Carlos Machado in Dallas.  He is the 1st Carlos Machado black belt, along with Travis Lutter, Clay Pittman, & William Vandry, and one of the first American black belts.  I am very lucky to have trained with him, as well as Carlos, and have learned a lot in my years at Tim’s school.  He is a unique instructor that believes in dialogue and active training, with an emphasis on resistance drills and situational practice.  I’m honored & privileged to have the exposure to Tim & his students for as long as I have, and will be doing my best to pass that on.

About Shield BJJ

For us, the best way to learn is to do.  So every class has an emphasis on mat time, with plenty of opportunity to test theory against resistance and refine techniques.  We also like to have two-way conversations, workshopping ideas out loud in a group environment rather than just one person lecturing to a class.  If nothing else, you will be guaranteed to break a heavy sweat.

Pricing Information

We believe in month-to-month fees instead of being locked in by contract.  If our environment is a good fit and our schedule is fulfilling, that should be more than enough reason to continue attending and participating.  In short, we believe we offer a good environment and product, and are willing to stand on that alone.

Class Schedule

Our classes are consistent and often.  Mornings and evenings provide a chance for people with different lifestyles and schedules to make it onto the mat.  That is the goal.  In our experience, mat time is the only way to ensure we get better.

Testimonials
Shield BJJ

Highly Recommend

“Gabriel is a unique cross section of highly skilled practitioner and very astute teacher. He is able to give you the key details for unlocking a technique’s practicality and the appropriate concepts so you can adapt to any situation. If you have the chance to train with him, I highly recommend you do so!”
Paul Risotti, Black Belt Instructor

Great Classes

“I’ve known and trained with Gabe for over a decade. He’s a tough training partner and an excellent Jiu-Jitsu coach. Gabe has a deep understanding of the “why” in Jiu-Jitsu as well as the how, poses thought-provoking questions, and encourages students to seek out the core purpose behind each move. It’s been a privilege having Gabe as a training partner and seeing his growth as an instructor.”

Come Train With Us

Our doors are always open to newcomers.  If you train somewhere else in town or out of state, you shouldn’t feel hesitant to step inside.  We are interested in good training, and value anyone’s presence on the mat who is willing to learn and try.  We do recommend that the best way to serve yourself is to leave your ego and your shoes off the mats.
